Wedhar Riyadi
September 22, 2011
Born in Yogyakarta, 1980. Now lives and works in Yogyakarta.
To Wedhar, images he gathered from magazine advertisements are forms of modernization upon which he pastes constrasting violent images. These images depict repudiation and struggle against global modernization using violence often carried out by people less welcoming change and difference.
If we pay attention to Wedhar’s drawings and paintings – which open to combine images pasted upon pages of popular magazines – we see that images and the imagination of violence permeat all his choices and strategies of artistic expressions. He presents image which invite connection with the ways and situation of archaic violence, during which reason is absent, as though seemingly reproducing stories of violence in his own society.
