Opening Ceremony and Night Performance

6 October 2021 @ 16:00 - 17:00

Biennale Jogja XVI Equator #6 brings together Indonesia and Oceania, an area very close to Indonesia; but the practice of geopolitics also makes it distant and even foreign. The organizers of BJ XVI Equator #6 2021 read the history of Oceania to re-identify Indonesia’s identity which is imagined as a melting pot, a meeting point of various ethnicities, races, and cultures.

The Biennale Jogja XVI is expected to be a space for dialogue between artists and intellectuals from Indonesia and artists and intellectuals from Oceania. Both can learn from each other’s experiences as ex-colonized societies whose existence has been defined by the power of Western knowledge for too long.

The history of European colonialism, the discovery of cartography, the expansion of transportation, and the emergence of internationalist ideas caused the phenomenon of migration and the appearance of an indigenous diaspora all around the world.

This physical displacement has also created communities of people who are detached from their homelands. In these new lands, they reorganized the ways of life they once knew in order to form a mixed culture through processes of negotiation and assimilation which continued over several generations.

In this hybrid condition, how do the diaspora communities across the world define the roots of their identities? And how do they perceive the concept of “nationalism” which presupposes the unity of a community within geographical boundaries?
