Join us on Sunday, 24 October at JNM for ‘Jalin Sahabat #8’, a special postcard making workshop for children, organized by artist and ‘A Pond is the Reverse of an Island’ member Anang Saptoto. In ‘A Pond’s exhibition space in JNM, you can find the results from the 7th edition of Anang’s workshop, a series of postcards with drawings and messages by children living in the Kalideres refugee camp in Jakarta. On Sunday, Anang invites up to 20 kids (max. 10 per session) from Jogja to make their own postcards in response to those made by the kids in Kalideres.
The kids can use pencils, watercolour, markers or crayons to create their own cover drawing for the front of the postcard, and write a message on the back to share their support, response, or their stories and experiences. The postcards made during the workshop will be displayed in the ‘Roots < > Routes’ exhibition at JNM, and will be sent to the children in Kalideres once the Biennale is over. Through this exchange, the kids can get to know each other and become friends, knowing that they’re not alone.
The workshop is free, but participants are warmly welcomed to make a donation. These will be used to establish a fund in support of the self-run school at Kalideres refugee camp in Jakarta, providing education for the 30+ children and 150+ adults who have no access to schooling in Indonesia otherwise.
