Biennale Forum – Panel A: “Out of Museum: Collection and Decentralization”

9 October 2021 @ 09:30 - 11:30

VirtualVirtual Event

Moving away from its conventional notion of mummifying artefacts of knowledge, today museums have the potential as a platform for decentralizing knowledge resources. In that context, the act of collecting cultural resources and the process of curatorial presentations demand new methods, approaches, and forms. The institutional definition of the museum also presupposes a new understanding. In Indonesia, the case of museums is a crucial issue amid the poor reputation of the state-facilitated art infrastructure. Meanwhile, outside the governmental framework, private sectors and local people initiate another form of museum-based works. They offer a kind of freshness in the aspect of managing and framing the contents. How do these initiatives now operate on their museum-based platforms? What other ideas can we explore to expand the potentiality of museums as a decentralized knowledge apparatus? How can we deal with the centralized and elite space of museums unintegrated into people daily lives?
