“I’m a man who won’t lose when fighting one against many in the middle of a vast field,” shouted a shirtless man in a red sarong with black stripes on the main stage of the Jogja National Museum (JNM) in the Biennale Jogja XVI #6 Indonesia with Oceania.
After being made excited with the hip-hop music of Itsmenach X President Tidore, the audience now looks solemnly impressed by the performance of Ikami Sulsel D.I.Y feat. Group 0 & 9.
The event started at 02.00 p.m by presenting six performance groups, namely Baswara, Bumi Risalah, IKMPHT Yogyakarta, IKAMI Sulsel feat 0&9, NTP, Yangere Militia HIPMMU Bandung, and Sanggar Lawamena IKMPMA D.I.Y.
After the South Sulawesi regional dance presented by IKAMI South Sulawesi. Two men wearing Makassar traditional clothes demonstrated the debus scene by scratching the badik’s eyes on their body parts.
“…For my venerable king, for the sole ruler of the land of Bone. So my spirit has crossed over to the afterlife…” that’s how Ipang Sugali, one of the performers from 0 & 9 brought Angngaru’s promised.
“Angngaru means a soldier’s oath to his region, to his king,” said Ipang, one of the committee members.
He further explained that the oath also shows that Bugis-Makassarese men must be true to their words.
At the end of the performance, the performance was closed with a fight of Bugis sarong, Sitobo Lalang Lipa, or Sigajang Lalang Lipa. The fight was carried out by two people who stabbed each other through their sarong until one of them died.
“Sitobo Lalang Lipa is a way to solve problems between two men that can’t be resolved by discussion,” said Ipang, explaining the sarong fighting from the perspective of his regional culture.
In addition to all performers, most of the audience also came from student fellowship or Eastern society members residing in Yogyakarta. Not just a party or cultural performance, this stage is a form of solidarity and brotherhood atop the art stage.
