A Pond is the Reverse of an Island (Jakarta/Majalengka/Yogyakarta)
A Pond is the Reverse of an Island is a collective platform working in solidarity with the Kalideres refugee camp in Jakarta, and refugees across Indonesia. A Pond.. brings artists and collectives together with activists, lawyers, community organisers and the refugee community to “act together”; developing artistic strategies to directly support the daily needs of those living in the Kalideres camp, as well as “think together”; making space to speculate about alternative futures of migration and citizenship.
Currently A Pond.. is working with friends at the Kalideres camp to develop community activities, fundraising platforms, physical infrastructure, alternative economies, and ways to amplify the struggle of the camp and refugees in Indonesia more broadly. A Pond.. began in March 2020 with Publishing Solidarity, a downloadable children’s colouring book in Farsi, Indonesian and English, sharing the story of refugees in Indonesia and raising funds to support the Kalideres camp during the Covid-19 pandemic.

A Pond is the Reverse of an Island’ (APITROAI) is a collective platform working in solidarity with the Kalideres refugee camp in Jakarta, and refugees across Indonesia. APITROAI brings artists and collectives together with activists, lawyers, community organisers and the refugee community, developing artistic strategies to “act together”; directly supporting the daily needs of those living in the Kalideres camp through community activities, fundraising platforms and alternative infrastructures, as well as “think together”; making space to speculate about alternative futures of migration and citizenship. APITROAI, which are taking place outside of this exhibition space, began in early 2020.
For their participation in the ‘Roots <> Routes’ exhibition, APITROAI is using the Biennial platform to support the Kalideres refugee community and amplify the struggle of refugees in Indonesia. Working with a number of friends from the camp and elsewhere, they presents art works, documentation, video interviews and texts. Some elements of their presentation are for sale with proceedings going to the Kalideres camp, in particular to establish a fund to support the self-run school at the camp. During the exhibition, APITROAI is also organising several public activities, including live tannour bread making (also for sale) and other events.
